Net Zero Focus for Sustainability Leaders at Brongain Farm

Pickstock’s Brongain Farm hosted some of the leading names in farming sustainability for a workshop focusing on reaching net zero.

The Welsh borders farm is a centre of excellence for the farming community and brings together key players in the agriculture and food industries to share best practice.

The recent net zero strategy workshop saw 25 sustainability leaders from organisation such as Arla, McDonald’s, the NFU, OSI and DEFRA come together to share ideas and support for farmers as they aim for net zero agricultural emissions by 2040.

Among the topics discussed were low carbon genetics and livestock performance, manure management and bokashi fermentation, the results of feed trials, and soil carbon and woodland planting.

The group also discussed support for the sector through research and communication, identifying barriers and opportunities to scale up emission reduction initiatives, and explore data sharing opportunities within the supply chain.

Managing Director Greg Pickstock said:

“The livestock industry needs more alignment if we are going to reach net zero agriculture emissions by 2040. These attendees were chosen due to their influential positions within the livestock sector and their expertise.

“This initial meeting was to raise awareness of our project and to start conversations around information sharing and industry alignment to support our farmers in reaching net zero emissions in agriculture.”

A further visit is being planned for the summer, with representatives from DEFRA being invited to find out more about Brongain Farm’s innovative work in cattle breeding and carbon offsetting solutions.
