“I joined Pickstock in September 2022. I was studying for a nutrition course at university but I wasn’t enjoying it, so I decided to complete my degree through an apprenticeship instead. I didn’t like the way I was being taught at university and wanted to learn on the job and complete my assessments while working hands-on in a business. This has given me a broader knowledge of the industry – it is a better way to learn than being sat in a classroom.
I’m not from a farming background but I have a strong interest in food technology and the idea of seeing from ‘farm to fork’. Pickstock is a great place to experience and learn more about the food process.
Looking to the future, I still see myself working in quality assurance. However, I’m open to new opportunities that may come my way at Pickstock – the business offers lots of opportunities to worm in different areas and pursue other career paths.
I’m really enjoying my time at Pickstock and I’ve noticed my self-confidence, communication skills and teamwork have developed significantly – I used to be very shy and work very independently but I’ve learned valuable skills that allow me to work better with other people and be better at my job.
I would definitely recommend doing an apprenticeship at Pickstock as I have learned more in half a year than I did in a year and a half at university. The team at Pickstock are very welcoming and supportive – if I didn’t understand something, one of the managers would show me in the factory exactly what and how something would work. This encouraged me to have a better understanding of how everything worked and allowed me to be encouraged to ask anything I didn’t quite understand”. Carys found that everyone at Pickstock’s is very approachable and a very welcoming and hard-working place.”
“I Joined Pickstock four years ago as a graduate after gaining a business degree and an MBA in management. Since, I have experienced working in many parts of the business such as finance, engineering, operations, sales and logistics. Working in operations was one of my favourite areas of working in the business and now I have taken up the role as operations support manager which I am really enjoying and still learning lots.
Before I started at Pickstock’s I really didn’t think that I would have ended up here – I had no interest in pursuing a career in farming or livestock and assumed I would end up with a career based in London. However, I applied for a graduate position with Pickstock’s and haven’t looked back. Since joining I have trained in WATOK, animal welfare and now I am beginning my apprenticeship in Butchery.
I really enjoy working here, where I have been able to gain more qualifications, understand the meat industry in-depth and learn the business inside and out.
The best part about Pickstock is that wherever you are in the business everyone is there to help and welcomes you to learn more. It is all on one single site which makes it so much easier and ensures better communication between areas.
Although I moved around in different areas of the business, managers gave me projects to complete to take on myself, where a lot of trust and responsibility was put on me. I found they were a great company to start with as although it is a fast paced and hard-working place of work there is a lot of support for anything you don’t understand or even want to have a go at and gain some experience in. I would advise anyone to consider a graduate position here.”
